Important to know - what's new?
With the release of Windows Server 2012 there are four editions available: Windows Server 2012 Datacenter, Standard, Essentials, and Foundation. There is no direct successor product for Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise, HPC Edition and Web Server. The Datacenter and Standard editions will take over the features.
In addition to that, the licensing model for Windows Server 2012 Standard & Datacenter has been changed from server-based licenses to a processor-based licensing model that covers up to two physical processors on a server. Each user or device has to be licensed via Client Access Licenses (CALs).
